ST. THOMAS OF CANTERBURY EPISCOPAL CHURCH

                         BISHOP'S COMMITTEE MEETING – FEBRUARY 26, 2007

 

Meeting opened with prayer at 6:05 pm. Those attending were Fr. Robert, Dalton Menhall, Bob and Martha Dudley, Joan Wanner, Barry Weiss, Patti Macias, Ashley Lemons, Donna Happ, Peter Mandery, Jack Rees and Clerk Judy Pellam.

I.       January Minutes – Donna moved to accept the minutes as submitted, Martha

         seconded and the motion passed unanimously.

II.      Position and Nominees for Election.

          A. Junior Warden – Bob Dudley

          B. Treasurer – Jack Rees

          C. Clerk – Judy Pellam

          D. Ashley moved to elect the nominees by acclimation, Barry seconded and the

               motion passed unanimously.

III.     Vicar’s Report.

           A. Annual Meeting.

                1. Very successful.

                2. Had some issues with venue and costs but are working through them.

                3. Business went well and entertainment and food were great.

                4. Anniversary of our founding is January 27, 1980 and this will be

                    remembered at future meetings.

           B. Safeguarding God’s People.

                1. Supplemental pamphlet was handed out by Fr. Robert.

                2. Safeguarding God’s People classes are scheduled for March 3rd at St. James,

                    La Jolla and March 17th at St. Paul’s in The Desert, Palm Springs.

           C. POST.

                1. Will outsource to an outside company.

                2. No cost to us as they will solicit ads from outside companies to put in POST.

                3. We will have say-so over the ads placed.

IV.      Treasurer’s Report – Bob Dudley

           A. Expenses include some issues with accrual.

           B. Diocesan subsidy is less than we asked for and we budgeted what was

                 requested.

           C. Pledge and plate for January was less than budgeted.

           D. February numbers should look better.

           C. Pre-school costs are below budget and income is over budget.

V.    Vestry Areas Of Ministry.

         A. Parish Life Commission.

              1. Fellowship Committee – Patti Macias

              2. Worship Committee – Fr. Robert

              3. Pastoral Care Committee – Joan Wanner

         B. St. Thomas Thrift Shop – Donna Happ

         C. St. Thomas Episcopal Preschool – Bob Dudley

         D. Christian Formation Committee – Peter Mandery

         E. Administration Commission

              1. Finance Committee – Treasurer (Jack Rees)

              2. Communication/Multi-Media Committee – Martha Dudley

              3. Property Committee – Junior Warden (Bob Dudley)

              4. Office Volunteers – Judy Pellam

         F. Outreach Committee – Barry Weiss

         G. Stewardship Committee – Ashley Lemons

         H. Fr. Robert discussed each area and what is involved and suggested each member   

             contact those who have previously been active in their area.

          I. All Vestry members should have an article in the POST about their area on a

             regular basis.

          J. Fr. Robert is interested in meeting with each Vestry member and discussing their

             area with them.

VI.    Vestry Member Reports.

         A. Fellowship –hospitality was discussed and consensus was for Vestry to take over

              refreshments for the 4th Sunday.

         B. Worship - Fr. Robert said the Ash Wednesday services had a very good turnout.

         C. Pastoral Care - Fr. Max has had his surgery and we need to keep him and Dena

              in our prayers.

         D. Thrift Shop - Donna said the shop is doing extremely well and she suggested all

              Vestry members try and volunteer at the shop.

         E. Preschool - Laurel Mueller is chair of the preschool committee and they are

             working on marketing and software reporting.

         F. Finance -will need to develop an audit committee and Dalton asked that Bob and

              Jack talk to  he and Fr. Robert about audit committee members.

         G. Property.

              1. We are hoping to relocate the office to a cheaper location.

              2. Our cleaning service has not shown up on several occasions and it has been

                  decided to advertise for a part time Sexton to take over cleaning.

VII.   Other Business.

          A. VPOD Duties.

                1. Duties have changed – don’t have to stay all day.

                2. Visit with people at your service and answer any questions if possible.

                3. If Jim Melendez is absent, then VPOD needs to make arrangements to have

                    all things covered.

                4. New Vestry members need keys.

           B. Correspondence – have received letters from the Bishop regarding priests

                leaving the Episcopal Church and also a letter from Kathleen Bunnell which

                will be discussed later.

           C. The Bishop’s Town Hall Meeting has been postponed.

           D. Bob reported that Mel Malkoff has applied for an extension of the permit on

                our property and the Diocese has paid off the loan on the property.
